France Intensive: Barcelona to Monte-Carlo Unhurried. Unrushed. Unequaled in relaxation. That's La belle vie in the south of France. Lunch in Sanary-sur-Mer could last into late afternoon as fishing boats come and go in the harbor. A stroll to Place des Lices might turn into an idle hour or two watching locals play pétanque and schoolchildren play. Our first stop is Sete, "The Venice of Languedoc," surrounded by canals, prolific oyster and mussel beds, and nearby wine-growing regions. With so much water around the town, you'll appreciate the time-honored tradition of water jousting, and might even get to see a round. Visit the great medieval walled city of Carcassonne near the Aude River, go wine-tasting, or take a walking tour of Sete's markets to sample local cheeses, fruits and delicacies like octopus pie. The action picks up with an overnight stay in Marseilles, a city that's thousands of years old with a colorful history to match. Visit Vieux Port, the lively fishing harbor; Le Panier, one of the oldest and most stroll-worthy neighborhoods; or the North African souks and shops in the Capucin district. For views, head to the great monuments on the hill-the Cathedral de la Major is one of the best. With two days, don't miss a visit to Aix-in-Provence as fall colors are changing and the wine harvest in underway. The fishing village of Sanary-Sur-Mer rests on one of the prettiest harbors in France, and its petite size mean you won't see any big ships. Stroll the little shops and patisseries, then settle in at a harborside restaurant for a seafood feast paired with local wines. If you're interested in wine-tasting, the highly regarded Bandol wine region is nearby. Calvi is another dramatic harbor on a horseshoe bay, with an inviting stretch of beach and hills rising in the distance. Stroll from the ship to a long promenade of inviting shops and restaurants, or head up the hill to the massive Citadel and even more impressive views. Inland you'll find unspoiled mountain villages. St. Tropez, Cannes and Monte-Carlo need little introduction, but we're happy to introduce you to some of our favorite things, like cafes along Pampelonne Beach, wine-tasting in nearby coastal vineyards, and hilltop villages with astounding views. Browse art galleries, museums and luxury boutiques, or visit a famous perfume maker. These towns offer their own variations on upscale evening entertainment, whether you're interested in fine wines and dining, club-hopping, or an elegant night at the world-famous Monaco Casino. Relax. Enjoy. Le belle vie indeed.
